you own a painting?
we have the solution

The Institut Restellini has as its vocation – in total and absolute independence from the art market – to work alongside the best scientists, on any work of art, be it ancient, modern and contemporary. For such purpose, it closely collaborates with the SGS laboratory:

For every work, the Institut Restellini calls upon recognized specialists of the artist, experts, authors of catalogues raisonnés, scholars and academics, museum curators, gallery owners worldwide, thanks to the international network developed by Marc Restellini over the years.

SGS is the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company and is recognized as the global benchmark for quality and integrity. With more than 90,000 employees, SGS operates a network of over 2,000 offices and laboratories around the world.

The Institut Restellini can offer a due diligence report, which summarizes the results of scientific analysis together with the expert’s opinion, as a complete up-to-date record on each work:

  • 1. Technical report

  • 2. Comparative analysis

  • 3. Documentation

  • 4. Conclusions

1. Technical report, including:

  • Visible light photography, macrophotography, raking light and UV fluorescence photography.
  • Infrared reflectography to investigate underdrawings.
  • Radiography for the characterization of the painting technique and the state of conservation.
  • X-ray microfluorescence (XRF), for the identification of chemical elements.
  • Raman microspectrometry for the characterization of pigments, among other elements.
  • Optical and scanning electron microscopy to reveal the painting technique of different paint layers in a cross section as well as pigment analysis.
  • Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which allows the separation and characterization of complex organic mixtures, for example in varnishes and binding media.

2. Stylistic comparative analysis

3. Documentation

  • History and provenance
  • Exhibitions
  • Literature

4. Conclusions of the study
